去年の3月11日なにしてた VICTIMS MAY BE LESS 「地震前にうちのペットがいつもと違う行動をした」。地震発生前に起こす動物の異常行動を、地震予知の手段として役立てようと研究を続けている人物がいる。麻布大学獣医学部の太田光明教授（６３）だ。南海トラフ巨大地震対策では、最近「予測は困難」と結論づけられた。だが、あらゆる予知の可能性を求めて、そうした動物の異常行動の研究についても、耳を傾けてみる価値はありそうだ。【城西国際大・阿部奈津美、写真は武蔵大・鈴木康平】 　●「阪神」がきっかけ 　１９９５年１月１７日の阪神大震災発生の時、太田教授は堺市にある大阪府立大学に在籍していた。キャンパス内は震度６の揺れを観測。教授は、地震発生から約１０日後、飼い主と一緒に同行避難できず放置された動物や、飼うことが困難になり放置されたペットを救護する目的で、ボランティアとして、飼い主がいる避難所へ足を運んだ。そこで飼い主から動物の異常行動について数多く耳にした。 　翌月、飼い主からの声を元に本格的に調査を始めようと思い立った。地震発生前に異常行動が見られなかったか、日本愛玩動物協会が避難施設で聞き取り調査を行った。すると犬の約２５％、猫の約４０％が、地震発生前にいつもとは違う行動を示したことがわかった。さらにその後、兵庫県内の獣医を対象に行った調査でも同様の結果が得られた。「これは地震の予知に使えるのではないか！と考えついた」と太田教授は語る。 　何の根拠もなしに動物は異常行動を起こさない。では地震発生前に動物は一体何を感じ取り、異常行動に至ったのか。そこで太田教授は「再現実験」と呼ばれる実験を行った。動物は、地震発生前に何らかの物理的な刺激や科学的な変化を感じ取ったものと仮定して、地震発生時に生じる電磁波を起こし、１５年間実験を続けた。だが、際だったデータを得ることはできず、実験を断念した。 　動物は複合的、あるいは人間が感じることができない、より大事なものを感じ取っているのかもしれない。人間が計り知れないものを感じていると考えるようになった。 　●中国の事例に驚く 　そのころ、７５年に中国で発生した海城地震で、国家地震局が動物の異常行動で地震を予知し、被害を最小限にとどめた事例を聞きつけ、２度にわたり現地取材へ出掛けた。「馬はいななき２本足で立ち上がり、ニワトリは空
