Russia’s Far East faces future of powerful earthquakes

View of coastal rock formation, 'The Drinking Man', Urup Island. Source: ALamy / Legion Media Scientists monitoring seismic activity off the coast of Russia’s Far East in the Pacific Ocean have come to a disturbing conclusion. Deadly earthquakes may strike the region as soon as 2016. In recent years virtually no seismic activity has been recorded in the area of Russia's Kuril Islands and the Kamchatka Peninsula, as well as Hokkaido Island (Japan). As strange as this sounds, Russian seismologists find this worrying. “The past year, as well as the six preceding years, was incredibly calm in terms of seismic activity,’’ Ivan Tikhonov, head of the seismology laboratory at the Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics, told RBTH. “Such a quiet spell can only mean that enormous amounts of energy have accumulated below the surface, and this pent-up energy can set off several powerful earthquakes. We expect these tremors to occur over the next 18 months.’’ Is disast...

Review of Predicting Disasters: Earthquakes, Scientists, and Uncertainty

Predicting Disasters  provides a comprehensive history of attempts by Japanese seismologists to identify regions likely to experience major earthquakes. Depending on one’s perspective, earthquake prediction can be considered a noble cause or a fool’s errand. Smith’s narrative represents both perspectives, as Japanese scientists discovered repeated cycles of earthquakes in certain locations, used technological advances to monitor and identify potential precursory seismic activity that, in some cases, preceded major earthquakes, and felt compelled to disclose these observations publicly. Against the backdrop of confidence that short-term earthquake prediction might be possible are the skeptics, who to date consider seismological understandings of the earthquake rupture process to be either inadequate to support accurate predictions or impossible due to the inherent uncertainties of nature. According to Smith, Japanese earthquake prediction efforts began at the dawn of the 20th...

11 MARCH 2011 JAPAN    earthquake, tsunami TOHOKU February 4, 1975 in Liaoning Province, China was a strong earthquake. Until then, residents have noticed on the serpent, who woke up in the middle of winter and crawl out of their nests. To many it seemed strange that the snake fled their homes, and people began to leave, too. The earthquake destroyed 90% of homes, but people have died very little. In Chile, before the earthquake in 1835 in the city Talkuano, all the dogs left the city. With the explosion of the volcano of Mont Pelee on the island of Martinique in 1902 killed 30,000 people, residents of Saint-Pierre, and only a few dogs and cats that have been linked. Seismic feelings of animals are different. A small aquarium fish "Elephant of the Nile" for 4 days feels the date of the earthquake. Caretaker crocodile nursery in Japan knows that the radius of the sensitivity of the crocodiles - 150 km. Among dogs, the most sensitive species and miniature poodles and Akita....
